AMK9 Retired Contract Working Dog Nominated for Hero Dog Award
Lake Mary, FL /USA – 31 May, 2012
American K-9 Detection Services, LLC (AMK9) takes great pride in the caliber of canines we select and train for detection work. Each canine is individually chosen by AMK9 Head Trainers and Subject Matter Experts according to his or her ability to prove exemplary performance in health, temperament, and workability. Because AMK9 works with only the finest quality canines, many of our canines lead outstanding lives and achieve noteworthy success as working dogs.
Former AMK9 Contract Working Dog (CWD) Uzo is a perfect example. K-9 Uzo was first deployed with his Handler to Afghanistan in early 2008 where they worked alongside Canadian Special Forces Teams locating numerous Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), weapons caches, and bomb making facilities. As a result of his significant finds, K-9 Uzo was awarded the honorary rank of Master Corporal by the small-unit leaders of the Canadian Forces.
K-9 Uzo recently became the first retired AMK9 CWD to be adopted out through the coordination of Ms. Debbie Kandoll and Military Working Dog (MWD) Adoptions. Through careful consideration, Ms. Kandoll matched K-9 Uzo with a family who has two (2) young children, each with special needs. K-9 Uzo has bonded with both children becoming their self-appointed guardian. As part of his daily routine, K-9 Uzo instinctively follows the child who suffers from seizures. At night, K-9 Uzo protects the other child who is terrified of the dark and challenged by nightmares; K-9 Uzo jumps into the child’s bed and sleeps there until morning, not moving, no matter what. K-9 Uzo has also become a regular attendee of the Veterans Affairs Post Traumatic Stress Disorder meetings where he visits with “Grampa,” a Vietnam Veteran.
Through the work of Ms. Kandoll and the MWD Adoptions, the American Humane Association agreed to accept CWDs as nominees for their 2012 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards. As a truly outstanding canine who has saved countless lives through detection work in Afghanistan, and is now serving as an unofficial therapy dog to a special family, K-9 Uzo has been nominated for the 2012 American Humane Association Hero Dog Award. Final candidates are chosen through unlimited public voting which is open until October.
K-9 Uzo is just one (1) example of the hundreds of outstanding canines and K-9 Teams AMK9 provides. We are truly proud of the achievements of K-9 Uzo and the critical work each of our K-9 Teams accomplish each and every day.
